  • In 2019, the transnational tradition of transhumance was included in the UNESCO Representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. In Spring, the sheep and their shepherds follow an ancient trail crossing the main Alpine ridge to reach their summer past
  • Also, fine merino wool is processed into HAUNOLD® wool felt. This wool comes from South Africa and South America.

The best of the sheep

Pure virgin wool from Tyrolean mountain sheep or fine merino wool. In addition, water, steam, pressure, soap, and of course, a lot of skill. Nothing else goes into our Haunold® fulled felt – and we are proud of that!

In South Tyrol, many farmers still keep small flocks of sheep. Some of them live in Val Pusteria/Pustertal, but most of them live in Vallelunga/Langtauferer Tal and Val Senales/Schnalstal in Val Venosta/Vinschgau. The majority of the wool we process comes from the sheep of the Val Venosta/Vinschgau valley farmers. Their flocks spend most of their time outdoors, grazing on mountain pastures from spring to autumn.

The sheep farmers in Val Senales/Schnalstal have a special tradition: in order to reach the summer pasture, animals and people hike from the Val Senales/Schnalstal over the Hochjochferner glacier and the main Alpine ridge, across the border to the rear Ötztal valley. This difficult crossing, the “transhumance”, has taken place for centuries and is now part of the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

The robust wool of the Tyrolean mountain sheep is perfect for our firm felt slippers, soles, bench pads, and seat pads. The cosy, elastic merino wool from South America or South Africa, on the other hand, is used for the thin, fine felts and in part for the tops of our original Haunold® slippers.

Wool, a natural miracle fibre

Wool is a truly impressive natural fibre. Thanks to the gentle treatment of the wool, it retains all of its many positive properties in our Haunold® fulled felt. The natural material gives a warm sense of comfort and is breathable. It provides warmth when it’s cold and keeps cool when it’s hot. The fulled felt wicks away moisture and rereleases it, offering a pleasant, healthy climate for your feet. At the same time, the fulled felt made of pure wool is nice to the touch and does not irritate your skin. In addition, the felt slippers absorb sound and vibrations when you walk. Fulled felt is easy to maintain because wool repels dirt, neutralises odours, and is easy to clean. Products made of fulled felt also retain their shape and are flame-resistant.
